Then when I was about 11 or 12 years old, a family friend was watching us and she cut my sisters hair. I somehow managed to talk her into cutting mine too. Mom and I can't remember the details, but somehow I ended up with my hair short. Like, to my shoulders.
I totally blame my mom for my obsession with keeping D's hair long.
It gets so long that it covers his ears and gets into his eyes. He's needed two cuts prior to today.
While it was never a total hack job, it never quite looked right to me either. My husband told me, after the last time I attempted it, that he looked like a lesbian. And I have to admit, he did look like a butch girl. So I swore to never cut it again.
And I didn't. I let it grow until it was to his nose and covering his ears. And then I learned of a traveling hair stylist that works in Surrey. She's a mom on one of the groups on Facebook I am part of. Jennifer came with many recommendations from other mom's who, not only used her services for their children, but loved the results of their own cuts and colours.
Jennifer asked my what I wanted done with his hair, and I realized I hadn't even really thought about that. I gave a quick description : "Short but with length" and she knew exactly what I was talking about. Thank goodness, because I didn't!
He cried. And screamed. There were tears rolling down his cheeks and he held onto my hands. Occasionally, he would stop crying, entranced by the screen. But he didn't flail and just sat there while Jennifer snipped away at his hair. She was done in ten minutes.
It seemed like there was more hair on the floor than his head, and I was a little worried about not liking his hair short. But it was a great cut and he looks so grown up now! I'm absolutely happy with his hair. And I am so glad that I went with a professional instead of wielding scissors and hoping for the best.
Jennifer is fully licensed and has been hairdressing for over 10 years. For the past six years she has been working for herself. She will come to you (Surrey, Langley, Delta, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge free of charge; travel fee for anything across the bridge) Prices are $10 for children, $15 for adults cuts. Colour starts at $50, with a cut included with any colour service. She was amazingly quick, even with a screaming toddler. Hands down, we will be contacting her for D's next haircut!

How old was your child when they got their first hair cut?
